Bees feeding on, and pollinating, bee balm (wild bergamot).

An unusual sight. We were kayaking slowly through a section of lily pads, and there were a lot of bees around. We realised they were landing on the lily pads and feeding. The leave were covered in grey coloured aphids (as were most of the water lilies at this end of the summer). It seemed the bees were feeding on sweet secretions from the aphids, much as ants do for land plants. We have since seen the occasional bee around aphid-infested lily pads, but not the swarm we saw that day. See also Wasps and bees feeding off aphids on water lilies.
