These are magnificent birds and quite common near us - we see them on most visits. They have a distinctive cry and the drumming sound they make on hollow trees is hard to miss.

A reminder that these beautiful birds are also responsible for carving big holes in our beautiful trees! Sometimes we worry that the large holes they cut are damaging the trees (mainly pine), but most likely the tree is already diseased and harbouring the insects that the pileated woodpeckers are searching out.
