Frequently we first hear, and then see, hairies tapping away at the trees around our place.

It can be tough to distinguish between small hairy woodpeckers and the downy woodpecker. I think these are hairies based being larger, with a longer bill.

Once this one discovered the seed in the feeder on our deck it was reluctant to leave.
