We don't often see snappers basking on the rocks like the painted and map turtles that are common around the lake. But this enormous specimen (maybe a 30in long carapace?) was there on the rocks just as the sun was setting. Most sightings are brief as they swim under the canoe.

A snapping turtle laying her eggsWe arrived one afternoon to find a snapping turtle digging up the grass behind our house. We watched for several hours as she searched for a place to lay her eggs. for the full story with photos and video of her exploring, digging and laying, and then photos of one of the eventual hatchlings taken several weeks later.
