Lichens have always intrigued me, for their variety of forms and the fact that they are composite organisms. But I'd never attempted to identify a species until I found these colonies of lungwort growing in the north-east corner of the Ottery. The large, cabbage-like "leaves" attracted me. Some (like the first photo below) were growing on decayed wood, but most were growing on a granite rock face (or perhaps on the moss that was growing on the granite.)

The above photos were taken in steady rain. Six days later, after no further rain, I returned and took the photo below. All the lungwort had dried out to become brown, shrivelled and paper-like. And much less obvious. The after a bit of rain again it quickly became green again.
